Things to Do on Aitutaki Island, Cook Islands
Aitutaki Beach Villas sits directly on the best stretch of beach on the island's west coast, making it the ideal base for exploring everything Aitutaki has to offer. Locally owned by the Tini family since 2000, we offer four private beachfront villas from NZ$385/night — book direct, not available via Airbnb or Booking.com. Guests have access to single and double sea-kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) for exploring the calm lagoon right in front of the property. There are coral patches and small fish congregations just off the beach, and the best snorkelling spot on the main island is a short walk north along the sand.
Aitutaki is a wonderfully laid-back island to explore. There's very little road traffic, the distances are short, and the coastal scenery is spectacular. Aitutaki Beach Villas has a fleet of automatic mopeds available for guest hire at $30 per day — the easiest and most popular way to get around. Two bicycles are also available, and we can arrange car hire with local companies for those travelling with young children or preferring four wheels. Helmets are not required on Aitutaki, though we have some available for guests who want one.
Beyond the beach and lagoon, Aitutaki offers a great range of day tour options — from Aitutaki Lagoon cruises visiting uninhabited coral islands (motu), to scuba diving excursions, deep-sea fishing charters, bone fishing, kitesurfing and guided bush walks. All tours and cruises can be arranged by the villa manager and companies will pick you up directly from the villas. Between July and October, humpback whales pass Aitutaki on their annual migration and can sometimes be seen breaching along the outer reef from the shoreline.

Aitutaki Beach Villas is perfectly positioned on the west coast for Aitutaki Lagoon day cruises — one of the most popular and memorable things to do on any Cook Islands holiday. There are five lagoon cruise companies to choose from in 2026, ranging from large group tours to intimate small-group and private charters. All operators offer complimentary pick-up directly from the villas and depart from either Arutanga Harbour (7 minutes by road) or Ootu Point (10 minutes by road). Cruises typically visit three or four uninhabited coral islands (motu), with stops for snorkelling over vivid coral reefs, a barbecue lunch on a remote beach, and a visit to the iconic One Foot Island.

Sightseeing around Aitutaki Island
Aitutaki Beach Villas sits on the island's west coast and is an ideal base for exploring Aitutaki by moped, bicycle or on foot. The most popular way to get around is by moped — our fleet of automatic mopeds are easy to ride even if you have never ridden one before, and cost $30 per day. Quiet roads criss-cross the island through coconut groves and past local villages, giving a real feel for Cook Islands life. Amuri Village is a ten-minute walk from the villas, and Arutanga Town — with its shops, ATM, police station and wharf — is around 25 minutes on foot, 10 minutes by bicycle, or 5 minutes by moped. For those travelling with young children or who prefer not to ride, there are several local car rental companies we can recommend.
There are three excellent lookouts worth visiting: Piraki Lookout sits right behind the villas and offers sweeping views across most of the island and lagoon. Maunga Pu is the highest point on Aitutaki, accessed via the road about a fifteen-minute walk north of the villas. And the view of Arutanga Town and the wharf from behind the historic CICC Church is a classic Aitutaki photo opportunity — all three are well worth a short detour.
The finest stretch of beach on Aitutaki Island runs directly in front of the villas — see our Aitutaki beach and lagoon pictures. Walk south and you'll reach Pacific Resort with its fine-dining restaurant in about five minutes — passing a local massage therapist en route — and beyond that to Amuri Village, where several cafés serve great coffee and food. Head north and you're at Tava'e Resort in two minutes, and Tamanu Beach Resort in five. Both resorts have restaurants open to outside guests and host traditional Cook Islands Island Night performances several nights a week. The beach continues past Paradise Cove (15 minutes walk) and on to Base 1 (another 10 minutes), where some of the best snorkelling reefs on the main island are found just off the beach near the fisheries department at the island's northern tip.
On the east side of the island, the village of Tautu is home to the excellent Avatea Café, several art studios and a local wharf, with a good mix of local homes along the coastal road. The beaches along the east and southern coastline are tidal and muddy — great for spotting mud crabs but not suitable for swimming. Ootu Beach at the southern tip (near the airport) has a small café and the popular Boatshed Restaurant, serving fresh steaks and fish — Friday nights it's the liveliest spot on the island. It's around fifteen minutes by moped from the villas.

Aitutaki Beach Villas is conveniently located close to a good range of local shops, cafés and resort restaurants within easy walking or riding distance. Here's a guide to the nearest options:
Tina's Grocery is open 24/7 and is a 10-minute walk from the villas by road (2 minutes by moped). It stocks basic food items including frozen meat, fruit and vegetables, some toiletries, and offers takeaway breakfast snacks and picnic lunch containers — handy for picking up supplies before a lagoon cruise.
Aquila Store is just a minute further along the road and has a café serving burgers, pizzas and curry chicken dishes. Nearby you'll also find Wok Kai for Chinese-inspired dinners, and Tavake Café which is a popular spot for good coffee and breakfast.
Maina Traders is the main supermarket in Arutanga Town, around a 25-minute walk from the villas (5 minutes by moped). It has a wider selection of food, medicines, beer, wine and spirits. Also in town is Vonnias, where you can pick up clothes, hats, flip-flops, reef shoes and fishing gear.
Heading inland from Arutanga towards Tautu Village, the Avatea Café (10 minutes by moped) is well worth the trip, serving Poke Bowls, Ika Mata (traditional Cook Islands marinated raw fish), Bruschetta and excellent coffee.
Pacific Resort offers upscale beach dining just 5 minutes walk along the beach; Tava'e Resort and Tamanu Beach Resort (3 minutes walk) have lunch and dinner menus that typically include fresh Ika Mata and grilled fish. The Boatshed at Ootu (12 minutes by moped) is another popular dinner option, known for its steaks and fish & chips when local parrotfish is available.
Aitutaki Holiday FAQs
Aitutaki Holiday General Information
Getting around Aitutaki is easy. Enquire about villa availability to plan your stay. Automatic mopeds can be rented directly from the villas for $30 per day — see our FAQs for full transport and activity details and are the most popular way to explore. A local Cook Islands driving licence for mopeds is required and is issued at the Police Station in Arutanga, Monday to Friday 9am–11.30am (cost is $4 and the process is simple — just show your home country licence). If you arrive over the weekend, you can still use the mopeds and sort your licence first thing Monday. Car hire is available through several local companies we recommend. There is an ATM at Aitutaki Airport and in Arutanga Town, and a 24-hour grocery store is a 10-minute walk from the villas. Drinking water straight from the tap is not recommended anywhere on the island — the villas provide filtered and UV-treated drinking water, and free water refill stations are located around the island. Aitutaki Airport, built during WWII, is on the north side of the island about ten minutes by road from the villas. Our villa manager meets all guests at the airport on arrival with a welcome lei, and provides a short orientation drive into the area pointing out key shops and restaurants along the way.
